Seoul Station or Myeongdong: Where to Stay After Landing?
Arriving at Incheon Airport? Compare Seoul Station and Myeongdong for transfers, first-night convenience and the final walk to your hotel.

You have just landed at Incheon International Airport. Your phone says the airport railroad can take you into Seoul. Now you have a second decision: should your hotel be near Seoul Station, where the train arrives, or in Myeongdong, where many first-time visitors plan to shop and explore?
The deciding question is “Which one makes my arrival and the rest of my trip easier?” Consider luggage, onward transport and first-evening plans.
First, understand where the airport train takes you
The official airport and tourism guides describe the Airport Railroad (AREX) connecting Incheon Airport with Seoul Station. Its Express service runs nonstop between the airport and Seoul Station; the All Stop service serves intermediate stations. Check current operating details with the operator.
This matters because Myeongdong is not an AREX station. If you choose a hotel in Myeongdong, you need to plan the last part from the airport rail network or use another appropriate transport option. Seoul’s subway network links Seoul Station and Myeongdong through Line 4, but whether that transfer is sensible depends on the exact hotel and your baggage.
An airport bus may help, but do not assume it stops at your hotel. Use Incheon Airport’s bus search and check the final walk.
Why Seoul Station can be the more convenient base
Choose Seoul Station if your first priority is simplifying the rail portion of arrival. An airport rail service ends there, and the wider station area connects with other rail and subway services. That can be useful when you plan to move onward by train or want to reduce the number of public-transport changes immediately after a flight.
It does not mean every nearby hotel is easy with luggage. The station is large; a map distance does not confirm the correct exit or a step-free street-level route.
For a return flight, investigate the Seoul Station City Airport Terminal. The operator confirmed in August 2026 that the terminal was operating after a renovation, allowing eligible Express Train passengers to complete certain airline check-in, baggage and departure procedures in advance. Not every airline, passenger or itinerary qualifies; consult the airport’s current eligibility requirements before planning around it.
Choose this area when your priorities are rail connections, an early onward journey, or a route where the airport train is the main event. Then verify the hotel’s exact entrance and luggage route.
Why Myeongdong can be the better first-night experience
Choose Myeongdong if you want to arrive and immediately feel that you are exploring central Seoul. Seoul’s official tourism guide describes Myeongdong as an active area for retail, Korean cosmetics and other shopping, with a range of food and visitor services nearby.
For a short first visit, this can be appealing: you check in, put down your bags and begin exploring a well-known visitor district on foot. You might prefer that experience even if the airport journey needs an additional step.
“Myeongdong” can describe a broad area. Verify whether the hotel is convenient for Myeongdong Station, another station or an airport-bus stop, and check the guest entrance relative to your plans.
Ask the hotel which route it recommends with your particular luggage.
Compare the full journey, not just the train ride
Use this decision sheet before reserving either location:
| Your real priority | Seoul Station area | Myeongdong area |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival by AREX | Direct rail endpoint, but still check exit-to-hotel walk | Requires onward connection or another transport choice; check the final leg |
| First evening | Good if rail convenience matters most | Strong choice if central shopping, cosmetics and browsing are priorities |
| Luggage | Fewer rail changes may help; station exits still matter | Route may include transfer or bus-to-hotel walk |
| Onward rail travel | Worth checking first for station-centred itineraries | Consider if activities matter more than rail convenience |
| Accessible route | Verify the exact station exit and hotel entrance | Verify the exact station exit/bus stop and hotel entrance |
These are decision criteria, not measured rankings of all hotels. No room rates, shortest walking times or universal safety scores have been verified for this article.
Three traveller scenarios
Scenario A — One night, onward train tomorrow. Start near Seoul Station; fewer changes may beat nightlife. Verify late check-in and the current train timetable.
Scenario B — Several nights, shopping and food first. Start in Myeongdong. One extra transport step may be worth the first-evening experience.
Scenario C — Children, heavy bags or mobility needs. Verify a specific step-free or low-effort door-to-door route. City accessibility listings do not guarantee every exit; ask the hotel for instructions.
The booking test that matters
Open two tabs, one for each candidate hotel. For each, answer five questions:
- Which exact airport terminal and transport service am I using?
- What happens after I leave AREX or the bus?
- Which station exit or bus stop gets me closest to the guest entrance?
- Can I make that final journey with the luggage and people travelling with me?
- Does this location help with my next morning, not just my arrival?
If you cannot answer question two or three, the hotel’s advertised “minutes from the station” is not yet enough information to book confidently.
Our verdict
Seoul Station is the rail-first choice; Myeongdong is often the experience-first choice. Neither promise applies to every hotel. Compare door-to-door routes and trip priorities before looking at room photos, then evaluate the actual property on its merits.
